INDY MAG CITES DOC FOR VACATIONING WHILE CAMPAIGNING

The Colorado Springs Independent pulled over Doc and chided him for vacationing while running.  When questioned by Pam Zubeck of the Indy why he was caught traveling while campaigning ? Holiday replied by saying, "Ask how many times has Sheriff Maketa been out of town and to where and with whom, and who or what paid for the trips and did any of the checks bounce?"  Doc added that the trip was planned long ago and money had been committed.  "I'm ready to go back again." he  proffered while being mug shot and printed. P.S. Some of this website was composed by me in early October in Montepulciano, Italy.

Why The Sheriff Is So Important To The Economy Of El Paso County

I saw a bumper sticker.  I saw it a few times. It read; "Come to Colorado on vacation.  Leave on probation".  We all want folks to come to Colorado and especially to Colorado Springs for their vacation or just for a visit. Vacationers and visitors spend money and money spent in our city and county is a very good thing for everyone here. Bumper stickers like the one I mentioned does not help to promote business and tourism to the region or to our city nor does it enhance their image.  A tent jail did not help our county's image either.  In fact, in 2007, an inmate residing in the tent was injured by a deputy.  The inmate sued and was awarded $80,000. And before that, a person was awarded $56,000 for a Taser related incident. The sheriff limiting inmates non-legal related correspondence to postcards and consequently getting sued by the ACLU did not improve our image nor  taxpayer pocketbooks.  The sheriff calling in a 7 million dollar federal boarder patrol  spy-plane to spy on local pot growers did not help our image or our boarder security. Besides, attempting to just look tough is not nearly the same as being truly tough on the very bad criminals who deserve being tough with.  And, we have no shortage of very bad criminals in our area that the sheriff should be directing his limited resources against.

Streets with pot holes are not only dangerous to motorcycle riders but also hurt our image.  Our region is in competition for tourist and business dollars with every other region in the country.  If we are to get our fair share of those dollars then we must be as inviting and attractive a region as we can be. That's why image is so important and law enforcement is a big part of that image.  The sheriff must be visitor, tourist and business friendly if he or she is to be an asset rather than a liability to the community that he or she serves and protects.  Revised October 4, 2010, Montepulciano, Italy,
